Saudi Arabia played its first match in 1957 against Lebanon. This match ended 1-1. Saudi Arabia participated in a major tournament for the first time in 1984. This tournament was the Asian Cup in Singapore. This tournament also became their first major prize. It won 2-0 against China in the final. Four years later, Saudi Arabia defended its title in Qatar. Here it came back to the final. This time, South Korea was their opponent. There was no score in this final, so penalties had to be involved. Saudi Arabia came out on top. It won the penalty shootout 4-3, defending its title. Since qualifying for the 1994 World Cup, Saudi Arabia has also qualified for the World Championships three times afterwards.
In 2018, Bert van Marwijk was appointed to guide Saudi Arabia to the World Cup. He was successful in qualifying and made sure that Saudi Arabia was allowed to go to the World Cup. However, one week after the success, the new board appointed a new national coach. Bert van Marwijk had to make way for Argentinian Edgardo Bauza.
Saudi Arabia also qualified for the 2022 World Cup, where it is in Pool C, along with the countries: Argentina, Mexico and Poland.
