The Croatian national team has been around since 1990 and was recognized by FIFA and UEFA in the summer of 1992, one year after the independence of the former Yugoslavia was declared. Croatia played its first official match before qualifying for the European Championships in 1996, and they also qualified immediately for this. In 1998, it was third at the World Cup led by top scorer Davor Šuker.
Croatia's most recent performance was the World Cup final in 2018, where it beat France, losing 4-2. Led by Luka Modric as a star player, she was highly regarded at this World Cup. Modric's play was therefore also rewarded with the Ballon d'Or. Modric is the first Croatian player to receive this award.
